The Cushing Family spent summers at Little Boar’s Head on the shore of New Hampshire, though typically Kate Cushing would take the family while her husband remained at work or traveled abroad. Harvey’s father, Kirke Cushing, was a physician himself, which is probably how Harvey developed an interest and eagerness towards the subject. He graduated from Yale University in 1891, studied medicine at Harvard Medical School and received his medical degree in 1895.
In his first year he rented rooms with his cousin Perry W. Harvey in a rooming house at 166 York Street, a building that is still standing. Cushing Rotunda The rotunda of the Yale Medical Library (now the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library) is decorated in honor of Harvey Cushing and was the gift of Cushing's Class of 1891 which was celebrating its 50th reunion.

The smaller version is found in most of Cushing’s books donated to Yale. Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar Street, P.O. Along the sides were the initials of the Cushing doctors and the years they received their degrees: David, Erastus, Henry Kirke, Edward F., and Harvey Williams Cushing. The architect was Grover Atterbury, Cushing's classmate friend since college. The bookplate on display is a later revision adding Kirke W. Cushing, son of HC’s brother Harry.

Cushing (1869-1939), pioneered the development of many fundamental neurosurgical techniques, allowing neurosurgery to become the autonomous surgical discipline it is today. Harvey Cushing, the pioneer and father of neurosurgery, was born on April 8, 1869 in Cleveland, Ohio.
