The Long Room Gallery with its Pre-Raphaelite painted ceiling is a highlight of the tour. Henry de Rupe (de Roache, Roche) held lands at Coolhill in 1318. With its arrow loops and central oak column supporting a 15th century post and beam ceiling, it is undeniably a very atmospheric space. Photos from Kilkenny Castle The picture gallery is magnificent. The Medieval Room situated at the base of the Parade Tower and opening into the Courtyard reflects 800 years of history at Kilkenny Castle. The castle itself is only about 350 years old but looks imposing and authentic enough from the outside in its dark grey stone and circular towers. Many period features remain intact to include high ceilings, original fireplaces, some Sash windows, ceiling coving, centre roses, architraves and doors. It doesn’t take more than a couple of hours to tour this castle. Kilkenny Castle is one of the earliest Norman stone castles to be built in Ireland. The ceiling is built like an unpside down boat. Towering over the city and at a bend in the river is the Kilkenny Castle, where the Butler family ruled over Kilkenny for about 700 years. Much of the castle’s medieval character was removed in the 19th century when the occupying Butler family decided to make the castle more liveable. Rothe House and Gardens is the only early 17th century merchant’s house left in Ireland. Tours are self-guiding and you can stroll through at your leisure. Kilkenny Castle later became the principal Irish residence of the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years. It doesn't take more than an hour to see the refurbished apartments, and they are beautifully done. It is very beautiful with paintings. We spent a couple of hours inside on a rainy day, not as long outside but the gardens are quite lovely too. The thing I remember most about the castle is the impressive picture gallery. In many respects it is like any other of the Great Houses one can tour in Ireland and Great Britain. It was built by William Marshall (c. 1146-1219) starting in 1195 and completed around 1210.
The Nursery was very interesting. We took a guided house tour. There is a local Ghost Walk Tour of Kilkenny town which gathers at the castle gates.
