DEME Offshore has launched an investigation and says significant damage has been caused to the crane. The vessel is under construction and owned by COSCO (QIDONG) OFFSHORE CO., LTD.

It is understood a rope broke during a heavy load test and the upper half of the crane tipped over hitting the ship and the quay wall, said local police. Deme Offshore said “A serious accident has occurred today on board of offshore installation vessel Orion 1 at the occasion of and during crane load tests. The vessel is under construction and owned by COSCO (QIDONG) OFFSHORE CO., LTD. A malfunctioning hook from an external supplier caused the crane accident onboard Deme’s new offshore vessel Orion 1. The article was updated to include a statement by a Deme spokesperson who said that the Orion delivery would be delayed following the accident. During a test, the heavy-duty crane mounted on the Orion was supposed to lift a 5,500-ton pontoon that lay next to her in the water. An Orion ship with a large crane pictured above on the DEME website DEME told Vertikal.net in a statement the crane collapsed because its hook broke free of its connections, known as the shaft.
The offshore installation vessel was scheduled to be delivered in the second half of May.
