I out climb most people, thus I consider myself above average for an average Joe, but 1/3 of the guys in a road race kick my ass. Mine are VERY low (100) and I see many people seem to average between 200-300 watts.I doubt I will ever get that strong but was wondering … I was wondering what is considered average Watts for a 54 year old women during the bike portion of an ironman. While at Peloton we have structured 10-15 min warm-ups designed for this test, Hunter Allen’s warm-up is 46 min and some are longer!

I recently purchased Garmin Vector pedals and would like to know what is a realistic FTP for my age. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

For all other factors we entered a standard value. My 20' average is around 200 W but the estimated FTP is given as 300 W, which looks more like 95% of the 20 s average and not the 20' average. In fact, it’s usually about double that of an average rider. Then, take the average power of that 20-minute effort and multiply it by .95 to get your FTP.

The standard way of calculating this for Peloton’s current Power Zone Training program is as follows: Take your FTP and divide it by how much you weigh in kilograms (remember that your FTP is your 20 min average output from your most recent FTP test minus 5%). I keep hearing about FTP’s of 300 watts and don’t think this is realistic for me. For example, if you get 200 watts, your FTP will be 190 watts. The Tour de France riders achieve 25 miles per hour over 125 miles, but that is very much due to the large size of the peloton (group of cyclists). My last FTP test was a smig over 4.0 watts/kg, which unfortunately is not much better than my prior test about two months ago which was right at 4.0 watts/kg.
